Sgian Dubh

OTHER NAMES:Black knife, skene-ochles, sock knife.
LENGTH: 5-6 inches
WEIGHT: 6-24 oz.

DESCRIPTION:
Pronounced Skene doo, this knife was not often used in the highlands because Highlanders seldom wore sock or boots and the leg rapping would not hold up or support a knife. Most knives were carried under the arm or hidden behind the back tucked into the belt and up the sleeve. They look like a skene dhu but were called a skene-ochles. The first notice of the skene dhu was not till around 1770 as more of a military item.

This is a bone-handled version of the sgian dubh and is part of a pair of edged weapons with its counterpart shown under the dirk section
.
